this morning

the marriage of a human man and a pig’s heart

science is mixing us

finally making us animals again

at the opening of a cave

light cuts through the dark

in a diagonal shaft across a stone archway

exposing the walls

but more light than rock now

light being the dominant material

another me is waiting in the dark

just beyond the edge

liquid feeding my skin

letting loose cells no longer

needed

a delicate shedding

of what was lost last year

me absorbed in the little beads gathering in my hair

marbled with color like oil in water in sun,

my eyes meeting a new phase of matter,

hundreds of them

the tiniest things

I would never have noticed if I wasn’t

choosing pleasure
